Heavy snow in Morzine – winter is here

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Hi everyone, Hamish here, Resort Manager for Simply Morzine. I’m excitedly writing to you from my office in Morzine in early November because the snow is bucketing it down here! I’m taking a bit of time out from our pre-season set up to report the promisingly good news for all ski and snowboard holiday fanatics. The headline is that it’s been snowing heavily in Morzine-Avoriaz for a full week now. More snow is forecast over the next few days, so, this means I’m happy to announce that winter is officially here!

Snow is falling, all around me!

The start of any winter season is always an exciting time full of promise for my team and I. Inevitably, the first snowfall in any ski resort attracts a lot of attention and this year it’s been no different. The various Simply Morzine social media platforms have been abuzz with lots of snowy posts from Morzine and Avoriaz. We’ve had loads of positive interaction and hope that’s helping to build anticipation for the scheduled grand opening of the Portes du Soleil on Friday 9th December. Shortly after that, the first Simply Morzine guests will check into our accommodation on Thursday 15th December and we’re confident that all this fresh snow will set us up for a great winter season ahead.

Snow in Morzine-Avoriaz: the facts

A total fall of over a metre of the white stuff has been forecast in Avoriaz, that’s from when it started snowing last week until the end of this coming weekend. At the time of publishing this blog (Wednesday), at least 50cm has come down already at around 2000m and there’s a serious snow depth accumulating. That’s a whopping amount of snow for the time of year and of course this bodes well as we kick on into the ski holiday season, which incidentally will be Simply Morzine’s 21st winter. In Morzine, the snow’s also been settling, with over 10cm gracing the wooden balconies of our luxury chalets and chalet hotel. It’s cold and more big snowfalls are on the way over the next few days. Morzine feels like a winter wonderland right now.

With all the excitement, everyone here in Morzine is asking the same question…
Is the snow here to stay?

That’s always a tricky one to call but I can’t see any reason why not. I’ve studied the long-term weather forecast for the Portes du Soleil and it’s looking very optimistic – pointing towards great snow conditions, which will allow for some superb early season skiing in December and January. Before then, more good news is on the immediate horizon as well. Next week we could see a rise in temperature to highs of circa 6 degrees, that’s before a quick drop back down to below freezing. This should result in a nice thaw/freeze pattern, helping to build a strong snow base on the pistes which in turn would put the slopes in an excellent position for the entire ski holiday season.
